Uses of Afoxolaner

Afoxolaner is an ectoparasiticide used for the treatment of פרעושים and ticks on dogs. The קרציות controlled vary from region to region.

USA: American dog ticks (Dermacentorvariabilis), black legged/deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis), Lone star ticks (Amblyommaamericanum), brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus).

EU: Marsh ticks (Dermacentorreticulatus), castor bean ticks (Ixodes ricinus), brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus).

AUS: Paralysis ticks (Ixodes holocyclus), brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), bush ticks (Haemaphysalislongicornis).

Method of application

Afoxolaner for dogs is administered orally, supplied as a flavored chew.

Dosage and administration

Afoxolaner is administered once a month, with the dosage based on your dog’s body weight. As such it is important to weigh your dog before administering Afoxolaner and only use the product designed for their size. Toxicity can occur when using the wrong product.

Chewables may be offered by hand or broken up and incorporated with a small amount of food. Afoxolaner may be administered with or without food. To ensure the full chewable has been taken, monitor your dog during and for some minutes after treatment to check no part of the dose is lost or rejected. If it is suspected that any of the doses have been lost within two hours, treat again with another full dose.

Treatment for fleas and ticks can begin at any time of year and recommended to continue year-round in areas where fleas and ticks are common. Afoxolaner should be administered at the same time each month to ensure maximum efficacy. If a dose is missed, administer the product appropriate for your dog’s weight and resume a monthly dosing regimen.

Recommended doses may vary from country to country. Always read the package information carefully and consult your veterinarian before starting treatment.

Possible side effects

The most frequently reported adverse reactions in dogs treated with Afoxolaner include vomiting, itching, lethargy, diarrhea, and lack of appetite.

Precautions

Afoxolaner is for canine use only. Do not use on cats or other animals.

The safe use Afoxolanerin pregnant, breeding, or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. Please consult your veterinarian before using with breeding dogs.

Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders. Seizures have been reported in dogs treated with the isoxazoline family of drugs, which includes Afoxolaner.

Not recommended for use with puppies under 8 weeks of age.

Not for use with dogs and puppies weighing less than 4 pounds (2 kg).

Signs of toxicity

There is limited information available on Afoxolaner toxicity. If you suspect your dog has had an overdose, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

Treatment for Afoxolaner toxicity consists of supportive and symptomatic measures.

Storage

Store at room temperature (below 30°C/86°F).
